Cops nab duo trying to smuggle drugs to Sarawak

SEPANG: Two drug mules have been arrested for attempting to smuggle in over half a million ringgit worth of methamphetamine to Sarawak.

One of the suspects, a 25-year-old cook, was caught after he was spotted behaving suspiciously at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport Terminal 2 (KLIA 2).

KLIA OCPD Asst Comm Imran Abd Rahman said the suspect was arrested at around 5am on Jan 21 near the departure hall at the airport.

“We checked his luggage and found eight packets containing 8kg of crystals believed to be methamphetamine.

“The drugs are worth at least RM264,000. Checks revealed the suspect was supposed to fly off to Bintulu, Sarawak via a 6.30am flight on the day he was arrested,” he told reporters on Wednesday (Jan 24).

He said during interrogations, the suspect revealed that he came to Kuala Lumpur with a friend on Jan 20 to collect the drugs which were meant to be sold in Sarawak.

“We conducted further investigations and found that the suspect’s friend had flown separately to Miri, Sarawak.

“We informed Miri Police and they arrested a man at around 9am just after he landed at the Miri Airport.

“He was caught with at least 8.3kg of methamphetamine worth RM274,000,” he said.

ACP Imran said further interrogations of the suspect caught at KLIA2 revealed that he was paid RM8,000 per trip to bring drugs from Peninsular Malaysia to Sarawak.

“This suspect works as a cook at a hotel in Sabah and has six prior crime and drug-related offences.

“The suspects are believed to have used the self check-in facilities as they believed it was easier to avoid detection,” he said, adding that the case was classified as drug trafficking under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
