ias sriram venkitaraman files discharge petition, know why he was removed from dm post in 6 days

IAS Officer Sriram Venkitaraman who is accused in the alleged drunk-and-drive accident has filed a discharge petition. The petition has been filed before trial court on September 19, 2022. IAS has been accused of an alleged accident that caused the death of journalist K.M. Basheer. Basheer was a journalist in a Malayalam daily when he was killed by a speeding car. It is alleged that the car driven by IAS Venkitaraman had hit him in the early hours of August 3, 2019.

In the petition, IAS mentioned that there was no material evidence to frame charges against him under Sections 184, 185, and 188 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. It was alleged that the accused drove the vehicle while he was drunk in a rash and negligent manner. He hit the vehicle of the deceased which caused his death.

The prosecution needs to show evidence so that it can be proven that the accused was under the influence of alcohol while driving. His blood sample was taken after the incident and the chemical analysis report said that blood samples did not have alcohol content. The counsel further contended that there was no legal proof to frame charges against the petitioner and hence he was entitled to be discharged in the case.

IAS acted as DM for only 6 days

IAS Sriram Venkitaraman was one of the toppers of 2012 batch of IAS. He was appointed as the District Collector in Kerala in July but was removed from his post within 6 days. He was removed from his case as there were alleged charges against him. Reports claim that Sriram never thought of sitting for UPSC until his friend asked him to attempt UPSC exams. Shriram considered his friend’s suggestion and finally decided to prepare for UPSC.

At that time, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan come down heavily against IAS officer Sriram Venkitraman. “The drunken driving made by Sriram Venkitaraman cannot be considered as an ordinary case. A person, who has worked in the magisterial powers and well aware of the rules of the land and the law, has committed this. This adds to the seriousness of the issue,” said chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan
