'I was standing up to my bully': Mother of Sandy Hook victim compares going toe-to-toe with Alex Jones at trial with her son standing up to shooter and saving the lives of nine of his first-grade classmates

A mother whose six-year-old son was killed standing up to the Sandy Hook school shooter said his courage inspired her to confront Alex Jones in court.

Scarlett Lewis said she was ‘standing up to my bully’ when she addressed Jones from the witness stand and accused him of spreading lies about the shooting.

Lewis, whose son Jesse sacrificed his life to save nine classmates, said she stood up to the conservative conspiracy theorist ‘just like my son had stood up to his bully.’

She and her son’s father, Neil Heslin, sued Jones over false accusations he made of his Infowars show alleging the shooting was a ‘hoax’ and for targeting their family in a campaign of harassment related to the massacre.

A Texas jury awarded the parents $49.3 million total judgement on Friday, far less than the $150 million they had sought. Still, Lewis said that Jones had been ‘held accountable’ for his actions.

Lewis, who was nervous to confront Jones in court, said Jesse’s bravery during the school shooting inspired her to spread a message of truth and take back the power Jones seemingly took from her.

‘Jesse stood up to the shooter who came into his first grade classroom and saved nine of his classmates’ lives,’ Lewis told CBS Mornings on Tuesday.

‘The shooter had just killed his principal and guidance counselor right outside the door. He turned into Jesse’s classroom. His gun either jammed on ran out of bullets, and during the delay Jesse called for his friends to run. He’s literally credited with saving nine of their lives.

‘I’m sitting on the stand and thinking, you know, in comparison to what Jesse did, this is the easier job for sure, safeguarding truth in our country,’ she explained.

Lewis shared how her attorney ‘literally asked the jury to choose love over fear and hatred, and they did.’

She said she hopes their family’s fight reminds Americans they have the ability to choose love instead of hate.

‘I hope they take away the fact that our personal power as human beings is in our ability to choose, and any moment how we thoughtfully respond,’ she said. And responding with love is the powerful choice.

‘It feels good, and it’s going to lead to a safer and more peaceful and loving world. It’s all of our choice every single day from the moment we wake up.’

Although Lewis sued Jones for $150 million in damages, she alleges the trial was ‘never about the money.’

‘My goal was to send a message about the importance of truth,’ she said, adding it was ‘absolutely not’ about compensation.

‘I’ve been spreading a choose love movement for the past nine-and-a-half years with the focus of keeping kids safe,’ she explained.

‘To me everything Alex Jones was saying about the tragedy not even being real and 24 percent of the American public either doubting the facts around Sandy Hook or thinking it didn’t happen was going directly my goal which is to keep kids safe.’

When she addressed Jones in court, Lewis pointed out that he had questioned the events of Sandy Hook but added: ‘you know that’s not true.’

‘When you say those things, there’s a fringe of society that believe you that are actually dangerous,’ she told Jones, staring into his eyes from the witness stand.

‘Alex, I want you to hear this. We’re more polarized than ever as a country. Some of that is because of you.’

Addressing her remarks during Tuesday’s interview, CBS asked Lewis if she saw any remorse in Jones’ eyes as she spoke to him.

‘I believe there was. I believe he knows Sandy Hook has happened and he’s made bad choices,’ she recalled. ‘I believe that he could make different choices going forward. I think that he wants to. I think sometimes greed gets in the way.

‘But, you know, we have one life, and we’re here, really, to love and support one another, and I hope he makes that decision.’

She added: ‘I hope he knows now it is a choice he can make.’

Jones on Friday was ordered to pay Lewis and Heslin $45.2 million in punitive damages for falsely claiming that the deadly 2012 Sandy Hook elementary shooting was a ‘hoax.’

However, that amount is likely to be reduced as Texas law caps punitive damages at $750,000 when economic losses are not involved, as in this case.

The punitive damages verdict came a day after the jury awarded the couple $4.1 million in compensatory damages for the emotional stress caused by Jones broadcasting falsehoods for years on his InfoWars online and radio talk shows.

After the jury issued its verdict, Lewis tweeted: ‘Today the jury proved that most of America is ready to choose love over fear and I’ll be forever grateful to them.’

The huge sum ordered from Jones, who for years gathered a sizable following for his often outlandish conspiracy claims, vindicated the lawsuits against him by families of some of the 20 schoolchildren and six adults killed by a 20-year-old man in one of the country’s deadliest school shootings.

A Texas jury awarded the parents $49.3 million total judgement on Friday, far less than the $150 million they had sought. Still, Lewis said that Jones (pictured August 3) had been 'held accountable' for his actions

Jones, a vocal supporter of former president Donald Trump, claimed for years on InfoWars that the shooting in Newtown, Connecticut, was ‘staged’ by gun control activists.

He has since acknowledged the massacre was ‘100 percent real,’ but the Sandy Hook families maintained that his denialism, coupled with his ability to influence the beliefs of thousands of followers, caused real emotional trauma.

He was also accused of pulling in massive profits from harmful lies and disinformation.

The judgement is not likely the end of legal woes for the 48-year-old Jones, who is also facing another defamation suit in Connecticut.

He has been found liable in multiple defamation cases brought by parents of the Sandy Hook victims, and the Texas case was the first to reach the damages phase.

He is also under scrutiny for his participation in the January 6, 2021, assault on the US Capitol by Trump supporters.
