‘I was relatively a good player’ Rulani Mokwena reveals which position he played

Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Rulani Mokwena claims he was a good football player during his amateur playing days.

The 37-year-old coach never played professionally but believed he had the potential to become a great player. During his interview on GameOn on Radio 2000, Mokwena revealed he used to play as a centre-back.

“Yeah I was a centre-back,” the Sundowns coach Rulani Mokwena answered when questioned about his playing days.

“I was relatively good and I tried to be the coach I needed to be at the time. I think if I had a coach like myself who pushed me and try to improve, I would have probably played professional football. But God had other plans so it’s just to accept the fact I was redirected into a different direction and just to fulfil those objectives,” he said.

Sundowns have had a good season having claimed the African Football League(AFL) and DStv Premiership. Rulani Mokwena and his are still reeling from the CAF Champions League exit at the hands of Esperance. The Brazilians were eliminated 2-0 on aggregate in the semi-finals two weeks ago.

Rulani Mokwena not satisfied with Sundowns’ season despite success

“No, I’m still reeling. And I’m talking personally, I’m still reeling,” Mokwena said after his side defeated Stellenbosch 2-1 on Sunday.

“Someone tried to console me and said to me, ‘You’ve got a double already, you’ve got the AFL (African Football League) and you’ve got the league title,” Rulani Mokwena said.

Mokwena says the club is still not over CAF exit

So why are you still reeling’. But I must say to you, I feel like I’ve let the club down, I feel like I’ve let the supporters down. I feel like I’ve let this group down because it is my job to lead,” he said.

Having defeated Stellies in the Nedbank Cup in the semi-final, Rulani Mokwena has a chance to win his third trophy.
