I was left in tears after a Morrisons driver reversed into my car & drove off – leaving my family stranded for WEEKS

A MUM has revealed how she “sobbed and sobbed” after a Morrison's delivery driver reversed into her car – before driving off and stranding her and her four children.

Sophie Corkhill, 29, said her “freedom was taken away” after the crash in County Durham on January 7 – effectively writing off her car.

The single mum-of-four had been loading some bags into her car and had just stepped away when the driver reversed into her – ripping Sophie's bonnet off its hinges and knocking out her headlight.

Despite running after the van and shouting, the driver failed to stop, leaving Sophie with no way to get home.

Morrisons have now confirmed they are investigating after the crash.

Her two oldest kids Jack, eight, and Olivia, six, have had to stay at their dad's house since the crash, while the youngest – Josh, three, and Lillie, two – have been at her mum's.

Jack is currently being assessed for autism and ADHD – and the break in his routine has “destroyed him”.

Sophie told the Sun Online: “My two youngest have missed out on so much at nursery.

“My oldest couldn't miss school so they haven't been able to live at home. Being apart has been really rubbish.

“Losing my car felt like my freedom was being taken away.

“My son is being assessed for autism and ADHD so a break in his routine has destroyed him.

“His behaviour changed again, he's not sleeping. His dad's having trouble with him because his routine is broken.

“He's going in a different car to school, he's not in the same seat. He's having melt downs.”

Sophie has finally been able to wrangle a courtesy hire car off her insurer after presenting them with evidence that the crash wasn't her fault.

Both she and her sister collected pictures of the car, witness statements – and photographs of damage on a parked-up Morrisons delivery van that they believe is the one that hit her.

'I SOBBED AND SOBBED'

On the day of the crash, Sophie was returning home from hospital following an operation to treat an abscess.

The younger kids had been staying at her mum's and she had gone to pick them up.

She said: “I went to my mum's to get my bags and to have a cuppa. I went to load the car up with the bags. I put the first lot of bags in the car and that was all fine.

“When I walked down to the other end of the drive I saw the van reversing towards me.

“My mum's house is on a main road but the Morrisons van was doing a delivery in a cul de sac.

“He was driving down the street to do his delivery and had reversed back, straight into my car. 

“He knew he hit it and he didn't stop. He just drove off. He didn't check to see if there was damage.

“After hospital, I couldn't believe my luck I sobbed and sobbed.”

And she said it was lucky her children weren't in the car at the time of the crash.

Pictures show the extent of the damage done to Sophie's now-totalled vehicle, including the bonnet popped out of its hinges.

“There was green paint indented in my black paint. It's just ridiculous,” she said.

Sophie went to the store manager, who promised to speak to the driver once he returned from his shift.

A Morrisons spokesperson said: “We are currently in contact with Sophie and we are investigating the issue.”
