Rylan Clark has opened up about his two stints in a psychiatric hospital after trying to take his own life, revealing that his physical health declined so much that his mother thought he was having a stroke.

The TV star, 33, has told in his new book that he felt he ‘couldn’t carry on anymore’ when his ex-husband Dan Neal left him last year after a six year marriage, after Rylan told him he had cheated on him.

And in a new tell-all interview, Rylan revealed that soon after, he spent time in a psychiatric hospital where the walls had no sharp edges and how his mental and physical health declined so rapidly.

Rylan revealed that he had been unfaithful to his now former partner ‘years ago’ but that once he came clean in May 2021 Dan told him their relationship was over and moved out after six years together.

Talking to The Sunday Times Magazine, Rylan said: I went through this period where I was annoyed that I’d wake up,’ Clark says. ‘All I could think about was, “How am I going to do this? How can I get out?” It was sick.’

Following the breakdown of his six year marriage the TV favourite took five months away from the spotlight due to his deteriorating health.

He previously claimed to have dropped to just nine stone which led to him being hospitalised for ‘safety reasons’ after refusing food.

At one point, his weight dropping so low led to his physical health becoming so poor that his mum Linda, 70, thought that he was having a stroke as his speech was so slurred.

Sad ending: He previously claimed to have dropped to just nine stone which led to him being hospitalised for ‘safety reasons’ after refusing food during the split from Dan (pictured in 2017)

He continued to tell the publication: ‘I went into this thing called SVT [Supraventricular tachycardia], where my heart rate was way over double. And it just wouldn’t stop.

‘It feels like a different person, now, that I’m talking about. I did not know who I was for that five months.

‘But, yeah, I did [try to end his life] — unsuccessfully, luckily. I suppose it’s the easy way out, but I just could not see another way. I genuinely felt like the world was against me.’

The television personality also opened up about his personal family life and he often appears on Celebrity Gogglebox with his mother Linda.

Caring mother: It comes after Rylan revealed his body ‘shut down’ and that his mum Linda (pictured) was convinced he was having a stroke during his health troubles

The pair are ‘incredibly close’ – but has never met his two half-brothers, despite one living not far from him in Essex. His dad died a few years ago.

He also revealed he was close to doing the BBC series Who Do You Think You Are but said he couldn’t do it, adding that although he is interested, he is ‘happy’ with what he was got.

And now that he is single, he told the magazine that at one point he decided to download dating app Tinder – but the company blocked his profile as they assumed it was a fake account.

He said his managers had to ring Tinder bosses to reassure that the real Rylan had downloaded the app.

The 33-year-old TV presenter also gave insight to the celebrity world by sharply describing it as ‘bullshit’.

Adding that most of it ‘is so fake’, he said you can have lots of ‘mates’ while working in the industry but ‘only a few friends’ because there is ‘no loyalty’.

Back in his school years, Rylan revealed that he was badly bullied, describing himself as a ‘chubby, ginger and gay’ child.

On one occasion when he was 13 one of the bullies kicked him so badly in the head that he was left with a fractured skull.

Sing your heart out: His new book Ten: The Decade That Changed My Future, named in relation to his ten years since appearing on The X Factor (pictured during audition stages)

In his new book Ten: The Decade That Changed My Future, named in relation to his ten years since appearing on The X Factor, he writes of his mental health breakdown after the split: ‘For the first time in my 32 years, I felt I couldn’t carry on no more.

‘What’s the point?’ I thought. I’d lost what I thought was everything, the one thing I always wanted. A man I loved. A family of my own. And now it was gone.

‘So I tried to end it. I won’t go into detail as I don’t think it’s fair on my mum, but thank God I was unsuccessful.’

He added of telling Dan he had cheated on him: ‘I woke up one morning and decided to tell my now ex that I had cheated on him, years ago. He left. Told me it was over and that was that.’

He added: ‘I have no excuses for what I did way back then, but I had my reasons. The reality is that over the course of my relationship I had started to feel wrong: I felt I was wrong for being successful, wrong for being me.

‘Everyone around me could see things weren’t quite right. ‘You shouldn’t feel like that.’ ‘Why are you doing that?’ ‘You know that’s not normal, right?’ But he was my partner. Someone I loved. They couldn’t say anything, because I would have always taken his side.’

Following the hospital dash he was administered an injection which helped his heart begin to beat again in a more regular fashion.

He explained: ‘I just remember the shot going in and all of a sudden this feeling from the middle of your body, both ways, almost takes you over, and you just stop and my heart stopped’.

Back in the day: Back in his school years, Rylan revealed that he was badly bullied, describing himself as a ‘chubby, ginger and gay’ child (pictured)

‘There’s just seven faces and this bright light just looking at me. And then I took a breath. And they were like, ‘He’s in a normal rhythm’.

‘I was like, ‘What the f**k is going on?”

He went on to say that family members were convinced that he was only suffering heartbreak however he was sure it was more serious.

‘I knew it wasn’t right. It turned out that my heart had to be restarted. I remember laying in resus and I had all these pads on with all these wires and not understanding what it was’.

He continued: ‘It was only afterwards that I said, ‘What was the pads for?’ And they said, ‘If you didn’t take your breath… because we would have had to restart you electrically. You don’t even think about it when you’re there. So I didn’t just get mentally ill, I got physically ill.’
