Menzies Research Centre’s Nick Cater says Energy Minister Chris Bowen’s renewable energy policies are driving Australia’s electricity grid “downhill”.
In his piece in The Australian, Mr Cater accused energy companies of “cashing in on the misery” of Victorians last Tuesday when Loy Yang power station experienced a major blackout.
Energy grid ‘much worse’ after introduction of renewables
“At the end of the day, this market needs fixing because it’s the consumers that pay in the end,” Mr Cater told Sky News host Rita Panahi.
“We just can’t have a system where – in the middle of the day – wholesale prices are negative sometimes and at the end of the day, it can go up well over $1000 per MWh.
“It’s a very messy system and it’s been made much, much worse by the introduction of so much renewable energy.”
