Chelsea’s Eden Hazard celebrates after scoring his side’s fourth goal during the Europa League Final soccer match between Arsenal and Chelsea at the Olympic stadium in Baku, Azerbaijan, Wednesday, May 29, 2019.
Chelsea have recouped more in player sales than any other club over the past ten seasons, bringing in considerably more than Premier League rivals like Arsenal and Manchester United.
The Blues have famously spent a pretty penny in recent years, under both Roman Abramovich and Todd Boehly, but they’ve balanced the books by making considerable profits on star assets and highly-rated academy graduates.
Since the 2013-14 campaign, Chelsea have spent almost €2.5billion on players, which takes their overall net spend over the past decade to just over €1billion.
Their total outlay is more than any other club in Europe over that period, but thanks to the considerable money accrued on player sales – such as Eden Hazard, Kai Havertz, Mason Mount and Oscar – their net spend figure stands lower than Manchester City and Manchester United.
Manchester United’s net spend figure (€1.3billion) is higher than any other club over the past 10 seasons, and a major reason for that is only accruing €483million on player sales – about a billion less than Chelsea.
The Red Devils’ money made on transfers finds them outside of the top 25 – 36th – but they have made more than Arsenal, who sit 43rd for player sales over the past 10 seasons, having accrued just €419million over the past 10 seasons.
Elsewhere, it’s worth noting how Benfica are one of seven clubs to have made over a billion Euros in player sales over the past decade. The Portuguese giants stand top of the net spend table over that period, with a profit of €638million, after colossal profits made from high-profile sales like Joao Felix, Enzo Fernandez and Darwin Nunez.
Here’s the top 25 in full, with figures via Transfermarkt.
