Werner ‘off the mark and already contributing’
Former centre-back Nedum Onuoha says Tottenham’s loan signing Timo Werner “will get better” over time, as he has only played 200 minutes in the Bundesliga this season for RB Leipzig.
“It felt like the Timo Werner experience,” Onuoha told the Football Daily podcast. “He looked good but it wasn’t where you felt confident when he was going to have a shot.
“He’s only done two training sessions, so this isn’t the best version of himself and he will get better. He’s been desperate to play football and the manager [Ange Postecoglou] has belief in him.
“He’s still really quick so he will fit in nicely with the space that the team can create. He’s off the mark though with an assist so he’s already contributing.”
Ex Spurs full-back Stephen Kelly agreed, arguing Werner has the chance to be successful at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
“He’s under less pressure than he was at Chelsea and even RB Leipzig because, although it would be great if he came in and bagged loads of goals, I don’t think he’s here for that reason,” Kelly said. “He can contribute with assists, his pace and work rate.
“It wasn’t a bad debut. He looked like he lacked confidence but I think you’ll get a better version of him here [Tottenham] because there’s less pressure.”
