How to Say "Girl" in Mandarin

Asia's Tech News Daily

There are many Mandarin Chinese vocabulary words that refer to females, so which should you use? Read on to learn the appropriate way to refer to a girl in various circumstances.

  • The Mandarain word for “girl” is “gūniang” (姑娘).
  • If you’re addressing a woman whose marital status you don’t know, say “nǚshì” (女士). This is similar to the English words “lady” or “Ms.”
  • In contrast, only use the word for “miss”—“xiǎojiě” (小姐)—before a woman’s last name. The word by itself can be construed as “prostitute.”
  • To refer to a girl as your girlfriend or lover, use the word “mi” (蜜). The literal translation is “honey.”
