Ireland is in for a wet and unsettled few weeks as low pressure takes hold while temperatures will remain at an above-average level.
According to the monthly forecast from Met Éireann, although February will be warmer than average overall, it is also set to be wetter than average – with unsettled weather for most of the coming weeks.
While the risk of any convective weather (thunderstorms) is ruled out for this week, ‘active weather’ like showers and thunderstorms can’t be ruled out next week as low pressure begins to dominate.
By week four of the long-range forecast, Monday 04 March until Sunday 10 March, the low-pressure system in place will begin to abate but unsettled weather will still be in place as temperatures return to normal.
Although the extended-range forecast is not as accurate as the weekly forecast as it can be quite difficult to forecast beyond a week, it can still be good for planning. Here is Met Eireann’s extended-range forecast for the next few weeks:
Week one (Monday 12 February – Sunday 18 February)
Pressure around the country will be around normal for this time of year with perhaps slightly higher pressures pushing into northern areas at times.
It’s likely to be slightly milder too with temperatures just higher than average countrywide. It’s going to be drier than average too with upper air temperatures increasing and also reducing the risk of any convective weather.
Week two (Monday 19 February – Sunday 25 February)
Low pressure looks set to dominate then with more wet and unsettled weather taking hold for much of the week.
The far north of the country will see the best of the dry weather but overall it is set to be wetter than average but not by much.
Warmer than average too but with upper air temperatures falling across southwestern parts of the country, some active weather couldn’t be ruled out.
Temperatures will turn mild but showers will rain down
Week three (Monday 26 February – Sunday 03 March)
Low pressure will now be very much in charge with rather unsettled weather expected throughout.
Wetter than average across the country but again not by much and the temperatures will be around average. Lower upper air temperatures again however will mean some convective weather is also possible.
Week four (Monday 04 March – Sunday 10 March)
Low pressure starting to abate somewhat but still staying wet and unsettled for much of the week.
Temperatures will return to slightly above average in the southeast but overall will remain normal. Convective weather, owing to a large cold pool of air aloft, remains a possibility for another rather unsettled week.
