CUMBERLAND COUNTY, Pa. (WHTM) – The Caddy Shack, a restaurant that’s been in the community for 34 years is fighting to maintain its lease with Hampden Township.

“Let me be clear I enjoy the Caddy Shack; I enjoy going there…I want to be frank with what we are doing here and it’s not kicking the Caddy Shack out,” said President of Hampden Township Board of Commissioners Nathan Silcox.

Hampden Township owns Armitage Golf Club located off Orrs Bridge Road and the restaurant building that sits on the property.

Right now, the township is trying to decide whether or not to open bids for proposals from other restaurants. A public meeting was held Monday, and people filled the room.

“The lease itself comes to an end at the end of 2024, so the proprietor has indicated to us in years prior that he was going to retire and that he was looking forward to turning the keys over to the township,” said Silcox.

Because of that, Silcox says a clause in the lease was changed.

“The proprietor has sold or has reconfigured his business to his employees so in the past under our past contracts we’ve had a clause in there to negotiate with the proprietor this past contract does not have that provision in there so it’s to provide to an RFP,” said Silcox.

RFP stands for Request for Proposal. Silcox says the board wants to explore different options.

“This is an opportunity to be taking a look at, at the what if, what can be here, whether it’s year around service, whether it’s breakfast,” said Silcox.

After discussion, the board and the Caddy Shack owners agreed to table the motion to open bids as they continue conversation surrounding the restaurant.
