Steelers sign two promising WRs for 2024 season

steelers sign two promising wrs for 2024 season

Denzel Mims

The Steelers’ 2023 season ended abruptly following their 31-17 loss to the Bills in the wild-card round of the playoffs. With their sights now set on 2024, they signed 17 players to reserve/future contracts, including two wide receivers who could make a real impact.

Among the 17 players, Pittsburgh signed wide receivers Denzel Mims and Marquez Callaway, two names that should perk up the ears of fans.

Mims, a second-round pick by the Jets in 2020, signed to the Steelers practice squad in October. Although he didn’t see the field at all this year, he seems to believe Pittsburgh will give him a chance to see it again sooner rather than later.

The 26-year-old has never lived up to expectations, posting just 42 receptions for 676 yards and zero touchdowns in New York from 2020-22. But maybe all he needs is a team with patience to develop him. The Steelers seem willing to do just that.

Callaway, on the other hand, has had some success in the NFL. The 25-year-old has 83 catches for 1,069 yards and seven touchdowns in his career with most of his production coming in 2021.

However, he hasn’t had the 2023 season he was likely imagining, bouncing around the practice squads of the Broncos, Raiders and Saints.

It won’t be easy for Mims or Callaway to make Pittsburgh’s 53-man roster in 2024, but nothing has been easy for the two receivers thus far in their careers.

Wide receivers Dionate Johnson, George Pickens and Calvin Austin III seem like locks to make the team. But past them, the final two or three spots are there for the taking.

If WR Allen Robinson II is still on the team come August, he should make the roster as well. But after totaling just 34 catches for 280 yards and zero touchdowns in 2023, it seems unlikely. The Steelers could save $10M against the cap if they cut him this offseason.

Pittsburgh’s roster could look very different in 2024 with an important offseason ahead, and Mims and Callaway could be benefactors because of it.
