How the national media reacted to Aston Villa's victory against Crystal Palace

Aston Villa made it two wins from two under new head coach Steven Gerrard by beating Crystal Palace 2-1 at Selhurst Park.

Matt Targett’s first half opener handed Villa the advantage before John McGinn doubled the lead in the 86th minute. Palace defender Marc Guehi scored a late consolation goal deep into second half stoppage time but it was too little too late for the hosts as Gerrard retained his 100% record.

Here’s how the national media reported on the game…

Villa overcome Crystal Palace to extend Gerrard’s fine start

Ed Aaron, The Guardian

The first meeting between two of the greatest midfielders to have graced the Premier League in their new habitats as managers ended with a triumph that Steven Gerrard must have savoured.

Trailing to Matt Targett’s early goal and having delivered their worst performance since Patrick Vieira took over from Roy Hodgson in the summer, Crystal Palace were left frustrated by a stubborn rearguard effort from Aston Villa before John McGinn made sure of the points for the visitors late on. Marc Guehi’s consolation goal arrived far too late for Palace.

The victory not only made it two in succession for their new manager since his arrival from Rangers but, as Gerrard acknowledged, can also provide a benchmark for the rest of the campaign as they inflicted Palace’s first home defeat of the season in his first away match before facing Manchester City on Wednesday.

Gerrard hands Vieira’s men first league defeat in seven games

Adrian Kajumba, The Mail

Steven Gerrard had the edge over Patrick Vieira as a player. It has continued in Premier League management.

In this first touchline tussle of these two top-flight greats, Gerrard came out on top to continue his winning start in charge of Villa.

Seven times he got the better of Vieira when they met as player, the Frenchman victorious in only three of their 13 meetings.

A rare goal from Matt Targett and sumptuous second from John McGinn made it 1-0 to Gerrard against Vieira in what could go on to be a long-running battle.

Until McGinn sealed the three points in the 86th minute with a winning goal from a midfielder that either manager would have been proud of, this game had nothing like the quality Gerrard and Vieira possessed in their playing pomp. The former, though, would not have worried about that.

‘A lot of work still to do’ – Gerrard calm over excellent start

Lorraine McKenna, BBC

Steven Gerrard says Aston Villa still have room for improvement after he secured his second win as manager with a 2-1 victory over Patrick Vieira’s Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.

After wildly celebrating grabbing all three points late on against Brighton on his debut as Villa manager a week ago, the former Liverpool captain was again jubilant when Matt Targett put Villa ahead with a low drive through a crowd of bodies from Ashley Young’s corner on 15 minutes.

As Palace tried to salvage something in the closing stages of the second half, John McGinn curled a beautiful shot into the top corner from the edge of the box to double the visitors’ lead against the run of play.

Palace managed to snatch a late consolation through Marc Guehi in injury time but it was not enough to deny Villa.

Gerrard’s perfect start continues

Ron Walker, Sky Sports

Matt Targett and John McGinn scored to keep up Steven Gerrard’s perfect start at Aston Villa as they ended Crystal Palace’s seven-game unbeaten run with a 2-1 victory at Selhurst Park.

Villa displayed their defensive solidity under their new manager again to follow up last weekend’s 2-0 win over Brighton, and did not concede a single shot on target until the final 10 minutes against an under-par Palace side whose performance was labelled “really disappointing” by boss Patrick Vieira.

They took advantage of the hosts’ dreadful record from set-pieces to take an early lead after 15 minutes, with Targett’s finish from Ashley Young’s delivery the eighth goal the Eagles have conceded from corners this season – a Premier League high.

Ollie Watkins was denied what appeared a strong shout for a penalty shortly before half-time but there was better news from the officials for Villa in the second period, when Douglas Luiz was initially shown a red card by referee Michael Salisbury before reviewing his decision on the VAR monitor and rescinding the dismissal.

Villa topple Palace to give Gerrard win No 2

Ian Hawkey, The Times

Not too many teams take maximum points off Patrick Vieira’s Crystal Palace, still fewer come away from Selhurst Park this Premier League season with a win. A feather in the cap, then, for the division’s newest permanent manager, Steven Gerrard, whose Aston Villa side inflicted a first home defeat on Palace. They join Chelsea and Liverpool as the only clubs to have beaten Vieira’s team.

Goals from Matt Targett and John McGinn had put the outcome beyond argument by the time Marc Guéhi pulled a late goal back in a contest that was always combative, as would be expected of any meeting between Gerrard and Vieira.

Douglas Luiz had barely joined the robust midfield duelling as a Villa substitute when he was shown a red card, to then be spared when the decision was reviewed by VAR.

Both managers thought the outcome correct. Vieira acknowledged that Palace had fallen short of their enterprising standards but praised the organisation of the visitors. “They were compact and we did not do enough to stretch them,” the Palace manager said.

Gerrard was thrilled with a “top” Villa performance.
