How Sunil Gavaskar’s Bias Denied Suryakumar Yadav A Well-Deserved Man Of The Match

Indian batters stole the show as the Men in Blue defeated South Africa in the second T20I in Guwahati to take an insurmountable 2-0 lead in the series.

KL Rahul (28-ball 57) and Suryakumar Yadav (22-ball 61) scored blistering half-centuries, scoring more than double a ball, while skipper Rohit Sharma (37-ball 43), Virat Kohli (28-ball 49), and Dinesh Karthik (7-ball 17*) also chipped in with crucial runs.

Calling it a high-scoring contest would be an understatement, it was a run-fest that provided the jam-packed Guwahati stadium with entertainment worth every penny. It was a ‘paisa-wasool’ entertainer.

There were many contenders for the Player of the Match award.

South African power-hitter David Miller, who scored an unbeaten hundred (107* off 47 balls), would have definitely clinched the award had his side gotten over the line.

Among Indian batters, if there was anyone who deserved the award the most it was Suryakumar Yadav. Not only did he finish the night as India’s top scorer but his runs also came at a brisk pace than any other batter in the match.

Of all batters, his powerful knock created the maximum impactin the Indian innings and powered the hosts to a humongous total.

To everyone’s surprise, however, it was vice-captain KL Rahul, who was adjudged the Player of the Match. Not only people, watching from the outside, who were a little bit surprised, the opener himself felt that Surya was the more deserving of the award as his knock changed the game.

“I am surprised I am getting the Man of the Match award, Surya should have gotten it. He changed the game,” Rahul said at the post-match presentation.

For those who are not aware, the decision to award the Man of the Match lies with the commentators and they vote for the players of their choice.

After Rahul expressed his disbelief, Harsha Bhogle, who was the presenter, revealed that he was getting the award instead of SKY because a certain senior former opener in the comm box ruled in his favour as he felt that the opener’s job was the toughest.

“As openers, we would like to think that our job is the most difficult but having batted in the middle order, I have realised that it is (equally) difficult,” Rahul added.

Although Bhogle, didn’t take any names directly, it wasn’t hard to guess who he was referring to.

There were only three former openers, who were part of the commentary panel for the ongoing T20I series between India and South Africa – Sunil Gavaskar, Aakash Chopra, and Robin Uthappa.

Uthappa and Chopra don’t have the same stature to influence decisions in such a manner as Gavaskar. The ‘Littler Master’ has, many times, in the past been vocal about the difficulties of being an opener.

Chopra, speaking at the post-match show, questioned the decision and said that, for him, the best player on the night was David Miller and if it were to him he would have given him the award, irrespective of the game’s outcome.

Gavaskar is one of the biggest legends of Indian cricket, who inspired players like Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, and others to become professional cricketers.

When someone of his stature says anything it’s hard for people to turn him down.
