The DWP has triggered the first Cold Weather Payments of the year

Thousands of Brits are set to receive the first Cold Weather Payments of the year. Around 10,000 people are set to receive £25 towards their heating bills after the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) ordered the first set of payments.

The payments have been triggered in 19 postcode areas following forecasts of sub-zero temperatures. Cash will be made available for the seven-day period which started yesterday (Friday 12th January).

Freezing conditions are expected to grip large parts of the UK next week. It is likely other areas could also receive Cold Weather Payments in the coming days.

Cold Weather Payments are given to people in England and Wales receiving a range of benefits. They are triggered during cold spells of weather between November 1 and March 31.

Almost 600,000 payments were issued in the first two weeks of December last year. More than 5.5 million Cold Weather Payments were made by the DWP last winter.

You could be eligible for the Cold Weather Payment if you receive Pension Credit, Income Support, income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA), income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA), Universal Credit, Support for Mortgage Interest.

You can see here if you are eligible. There are a number of factors which are taken into account by the DWP.

Weather experts say temperatures will drop in Cumbria, Northumberland and around the Scottish Borders. The latest payments have been made in areas covered by three weather stations – Shap, in Cumbria, Redesdale, in Northumberland, and Eskdalemuir, in the Scottish borders.

This will be the third payment this winter triggered by the Shap weather station, and the second payment for the other two areas. It is thought about 10,000 people will be eligible for the payments in these areas, with an estimated 6,000 in receipt of Pension Credit.
