How Man City players reacted in West Ham dressing room to first Carabao Cup exit in five years

Asia's Tech News Daily

Manchester City’s players were immediately focussed on how they can bounce back after the disappointment of exiting the Carabao Cup on penalties to West Ham.

City were beaten in a Carabao Cup tie for the first time in five years, ending a run of 12 consecutive rounds where they have progressed or won the trophy. Pep Guardiola made nine changes to his side, with a relatively-strong West Ham side holding firm to earn a 0-0 draw after 90 minutes.

That took the game to penalties, with five perfect spot-kicks from the hosts earning a spot in the quarter-finals after Phil Foden fired wide from his penalty.

As a result, City are out of the competition they have dominated since 2017, and must now focus on the Premier League as they return to action at the weekend against Crystal Palace.

Defender Aleks Zinchenko, making his first start since returning from injury, revealed the disappointment in the squad at full time, but a sense of pride at their accomplishments in the League Cup under Pep Guardiola.

He said : “Everyone is disappointed, no-one likes to lose because we’re here to win everything, try to win every time we’re on the pitch. From tomorrow we need to be focussed, react to this and bounce back.

“It wasn’t our day but we created a lot of chances to score. Unfortunately, we didn’t today but this can happen, this is football.

“The most important thing is we need to focus on the next one and get back on track. It can happen in football, everyone is professional, we still have a lot of games to play this season.

“We still have a lot of challenges ahead of us and we need to be focussed on the next one. We will take the best from this game and we are going to analyse it to see what we didn’t do and could do more, but I think everything will be fine.”

Reflecting on City’s record in the Carabao Cup and their chances of still picking up some silverware this season, Zinchenko added: “It’s a massive pleasure, to be here and to have these kind of challenges.

“It’s nice to win the trophies obviously, unfortunately we’re out from this one but still we’ll have a lot of chances.”
