How does aneurysm clipping and coiling work? Find out what the experts say
Answered by Dr. Ipsa Arora

A tiny clip across the base or neck of the aneurysm is inserted to ensure normal blood circulation. The clip functions like a minuscule spindle, in which the blades of the clip remain securely closed until the blades are pressurized to open them.

Aneurysm clipping involves placing a tiny clamp at the aneurysm base to stop the bleeding process. Aneurysm coiling involves the use of a catheter which is guided through the blood vessels up to the aneurysm where a coil is then released.

A small clip is placed across the base. Or neck, of the aneurysm to block the normal blood flow from entering. The clip works like a tiny coil-spring clothespin, in which the blades of the clip remain tightly closed until pressure is applied to open the blades. Aneurysms vary in their size and shape.
