Hypothermia is defined as a fall in body temperature to less than 95 degrees Fahrenheit or 35 degrees Celsius. It is caused by cold weather or immersion in cold water. The signs and symptoms of hypothermia are shivering, shallow breathing, slurred speech, weak pulse, confusion, drowsiness, memory loss, low energy, bright red skin, and loss of consciousness. Frostbite is an injury caused by freezing to the skin and tissues. Frostbite due to hypothermia can be prevented by removing any wet clothing, moving to a warmer place, wearing layers of clothing, and warming the center of the body like the chest, neck, and abdomen by using thick blankets.

To prevent hypothermia or frostbite when sleeping outdoors or during a power outage, keep warm by wearing layers of clothing and using insulated blankets. Avoid sweating, as wet clothes make you colder. Use a sleeping bag rated for low temperatures. Create a barrier from the cold ground with an insulating pad. Stay hydrated and eat high-energy foods. If you feel extremely cold or numb, seek warmth immediately, as these conditions can be dangerous.

Have adequate dressing, which include thermals, jackets, overcoats etc. These help to keep the body warm, thus preventing hypothermia. In addition to this, have adequate amount of food before sleep to restore the internal energy production.
