TOKYO – Fencer Lee Kiefer became the first American woman to win an Olympic medal in individual foil, taking gold Sunday at the Tokyo Olympics.
Kiefer, a med school student from Lexington, Kentucky, beat 2016 Olympic champion Inna Deriglazova of the Russian Olympic Committee 15-13 in the final. She is a three-time Olympian who has been closing in on an Olympic medal over the last five years.
Currently ranked No. 5 in the world, Kiefer finished fifth at the 2012 London Olympics. She earned the No. 1 ranking in the current quad, and prior to the pandemic, won three medals on the World Cup circuit.

Kiefer became the first American, male or female, to medal in the individual foil event since 1960.
It was the ninth Olympic medal for Team USA at the Tokyo Olympics on Sunday after being shut out of the medals on Day 1.
