St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church was told Sunday that collections from the previous week were stolen from its safe.

Collection money stolen from Sugar Land Catholic church

SUGAR LAND, Texas — KHOU 11 News learned about a Catholic church in the Houston area that was recently targeted by a thief.

Staff members heard the news during this past Sunday’s service. They aren’t sure why the church was targeted or who could be responsible.

Church leaders at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in Sugar Land said the crime happened the previous Sunday after services — sometime between 2:30 p.m. and 6:30 a.m.

A janitor arrived at the church Monday morning and saw signs of a break-in — including a broken window and an open door.

Staff members later found out that money was taken from a safe. The first and second collections from the previous Sunday service were gone. Staff members said the money was earmarked to go to St. Vincent De Paul to help the homeless.

Parishioners are often asked to keep an eye out for unauthorized cashing of checks. Staff members said the crime was reported to the Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office.

It’s the latest crime involving a church within the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston.

Several weeks ago, KHOU 11 News reported that a fake priest reportedly stole from a church in southwest Houston.

Houston police said they’re still actively investigating that case. It’s unclear if the incidents are connected.
