Instagram, Facebook make it harder for people to contact teen accounts

Meta, the parent company of Instagram and Facebook, has introduced new measures to enhance protection and restrict unwanted contact with teens. The latest updates focus on limiting communication and interactions for teens under the age of 16 (or under 18 in specific countries) on both platforms.

On Instagram, Meta has implemented stricter measures by default, preventing teens from receiving direct messages (DMs) from individuals they don’t follow or aren’t connected to on the platform. This includes other teens as well. Under this new default setting, teens can only be messaged or added to group chats by individuals they already follow or have a connection with, providing an added layer of security for teens and their parents.

This default setting is a part of Meta’s ongoing efforts to create a safer online environment for younger users. It complements existing restrictions that limit adults over the age of 19 from messaging teens who don’t follow them. Additionally, the type and number of DMs that people can send to someone who doesn’t follow them have been limited to one text-only message.

The changes extend to Messenger as well, where users under the age of 16 (or under 18 in certain countries) will now only receive messages from Facebook friends or individuals they’re connected to through phone contacts. These measures aim to minimize the risk of unwanted contact and prioritize the safety of young users.

Supervised accounts on Instagram will now require parental permission for teens (under 16) to change their default safety and privacy settings. Parents will receive notifications and can either approve or deny requests to alter settings, such as making an account public, adjusting sensitivity controls, or changing DM settings to receive messages from individuals not already followed or connected to.

Larry Magid, CEO of ConnectSafely, “Empowering parents to approve or deny requests to change their teen’s default safety and privacy settings gives parents the tools they need to help protect their teens, while at the same time respecting their teens’ privacy and ability to communicate with their friends and family.”
