Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha star Kim Seon-ho apologises following abortion scandal as dating abuse allegations linked to him derail his career

South Korean actor and Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha star Kim Seon-ho apologised publicly on Wednesday after allegations of past romantic abuses were linked to him.

The apology came after two days of chaos in South Korea after an anonymous writer posted online Monday that she was the ex-girlfriend of a popular actor, who had taken advantage of her in a variety of ways, including misleading her about their relationship and coercing her into having an abortion in order to prevent his career from being derailed.

“I sincerely apologise for the belated statement,” Kim wrote, according to Korean pop culture outlet Soompi.

“I was seeing her with good emotions. In that process, I hurt her due to my carelessness and inconsiderate actions. I wanted to meet and apologise to her directly, but I am not able to properly convey the apology now and am waiting for that time to come. For now, I would like to genuinely apologise to her through this statement.”

The allegations were posted online the day after Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha, which also stars Shin Min-a, ended on Sunday night.

After the rumour was linked to Kim, advertisers in the country began pulling endorsement deals with the star. Kim, as well as Shin and other cast members, also stopped press events promoting the finale of Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha.

The sweet romantic comedy series had turned Kim, a rising star in South Korea, into a household name in the country and beyond. The allegations and Kim’s apology, ostensibly confirming them, raises concerns about the actor’s future just as he saw his biggest career success to date.

The 35-year-old started out in South Korea’s theatre scene before getting his TV debut in 2017. He gained renown that year with his appearance in the action comedy series Two Cops, then starred in the 2018 show 100 Days My Prince.

He continued to grow in popularity, becoming a major presence on other Korean dramas and variety shows, including being a cast member on the popular travel variety series 2 Days & 1 Night (from which he has now been dropped following the online accusations). Further success followed through his role in last year’s tech-based K-drama Start-Up and he became a popular brand ambassador in South Korea.

In 2020 he served as one of the hosts of South Korean broadcaster MBC’s annual year-end music festival, known as the Gayo Daejejeon, a role typically filled only by the most popular of South Korean entertainers.

Though the relationship scandal contrasts with the sweet nature of his Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha character Hong Du-sik, the series continues to trend in markets around the world. As of Wednesday morning, Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha remains the top show on Netflix in Hong Kong.
