Swami Vivekananda Jayanti 2024: Art Institute of Chicago staircase illuminates with timeless speech, listen to it here
The Art Institute of Chicago is radiating with the spirit of enlightenment as it celebrates Vivekananda Jayanti 2024, also known as National Youth Day, transforming its historic staircase into a beacon of unity adorned with the immortal words of Swami Vivekananda’s iconic 1893 speech. Today marks Swami Vivekananda’s 161st birth anniversary.
More than 120 years ago, over 6,000 people gathered in the same assembly hall to witness the young monk captivate the audience during the World’s Parliament of Religions. In a tribute that transcends time, the Art Institute of Chicago illuminated the staircase with the profound words Vivekananda spoke on that memorable day.
A striking Instagram post by @thebetterindia captures the grandeur of the occasion, visually connecting the modern celebration to the historic moment. Vivekananda’s opening words, “Sisters and Brothers of America,” resonate through time, echoing on the illuminated staircase, reminding us that his call for unity and the end of religious intolerance remains as relevant today as it was 127 years ago.

“We believe not only in universal toleration, but we accept all religions as true. I am proud to belong to a nation which has sheltered the persecuted and the refugees of all religions and all nations of the earth,” Vivekananda’s words continue to echo, resonating in a world where his call for unity is still needed.
Renowned Mumbai-based artist Jitish Kallat crafted a powerful installation on the staircase, treating it as a symbolic notepad. The installation stands as a testament to hope and shared humanity, transforming the museum space into a canvas for conveying a timeless message of peace and understanding.
Swami Vivekananda’s speech concludes with a poignant reflection on the state of humanity: “But their time is come; and I fervently hope that the bell that tolled this morning in honour of this convention may be the death-knell of all fanaticism, of all persecutions with the sword or with the pen, and of all uncharitable feelings between persons wending their way to the same goal.” The words serve as a timeless reminder of the collective responsibility to strive for a more enlightened and harmonious world.
Social media users expressed their appreciation for the installation tribute where one said, “Bringing all humanity together 👏 filled with pride.” A second added, “This is what most Indians are seeking in today’s India.” A third mentioned, “Wow!! So proud!!”
