Hollywood actors who speak out against firearms in movies don’t have it easy

Guns don’t kill people. Alec Baldwin kills people’. Donald Trump’s son thought his hunch was so funny that he had it printed on a T-shirt after the actor accidentally got on the set of Peace shot the camerawoman. Trump sells the T-shirt in his webshop.

Fortunately, many conservative gun enthusiasts also find that tasteless. But it plays exactly into the sentiment that lives in that camp: nice and hypocritical, that left-wing Baldwin. Making fun of Trump in Saturday Night Live, you, as an anti-gun activist, rally behind a movement that turns against the National Rifle Association (NRA) and meanwhile brandish a weapon in a self-produced western. Which – as it turns out – was handled very badly by a couple of incapable crew members.

As a movie star who speaks out against firearms, can you figure in films that glorify or normalize gun violence? Yes, because movies are game, you hear from Hollywood. It’s harmless escapism. Or they are films that warn against violence.

Meanwhile, weapons in movies are also often product placement, and no weapons manufacturer would venture into that if it didn’t actually increase sales.

After Sandy Hook, Denzel Washington was one of the few actors who openly said he would pay attention to the roles he chooses. Dustin Hoffman, himself once threatened, stated in an interview with the NPR that he avoided roles in which he had to use a weapon in his career as much as possible. He thinks that violence is often portrayed too simplistic in films. But, he also suggested, if you say something like that, you’re going to have a really hard time in Hollywood as an actor.

After the fatal accident on the set of Peace various measures will be taken. For example, there is a call to ban weapons from film sets. If you get those worms out dune from the computer, why not a weapon? At the series Mare of Easttown every shot comes from the computer, according to the director. You may see that, but safety comes first, he wrote on Twitter.

Yet the weapons themselves will never really be up for discussion. A girl and a gun – that’s all you need to make a movie, Godard once said. Of course you can’t turn that around – you don’t necessarily need girls or guns for a movie, but it’s hard to imagine a movie industry without them.
