NCP row: Sharad faction can use ‘NCP-Sharadchandra Pawar’ name till further orders, SC says
NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Monday said that the name ‘Nationalist Congress Party-Sharadchandra Pawar’ granted to the Sharad Pawar faction as per the EC’s order will continue till further orders.
The bench of Justices Surya Kant and KV Viswanathan, however, allowed Sharad Pawar to move the Election Commission for allocation of party symbol. The top court asked the poll panel to allot the same within a week.
Senior advocate Abhishek Singhvi, appearing for Sharad Pawar, said that order passed by the Election Commission on February 7 is an interim arrangement made by the poll panel for Rajya Sabha elections till February 27.
The SC-bench also sought Ajit Pawar’s response on uncle Sharad Pawar’s plea against EC’s February 7 order of recognising the Maharashtra deputy CM-led faction as the real NCP.
Maharashtra assembly Speaker Rahul Narwekar last week held that the NCP faction led by Ajit Pawar was the real NCP. On February 7, EC had announced the same and also allotted the party’s ‘clock’ symbol to the group.
