hit the road abroad! 5 countries where your indian license will work

Traveling to a foreign country is an exhilarating adventure that many of us eagerly anticipate. While some prefer to explore new destinations using public transportation or taxis, others relish the opportunity to drive in a different country by renting a vehicle.

Fortunately, several countries welcome Indian travelers to drive on their roads using a valid Indian driving license, eliminating the need for an international driving permit. Here’s a closer look at five such countries:

United States of America (USA)

Indian driving licenses are valid for one year upon entry into the USA.

However, the license must not be in any regional language and should be translated into English if necessary.

Travelers also need to carry an attested I-94 form as proof of legitimate entry into the country.

Canada

  • Indian citizens can drive with their Indian driving license for up to 60 days in Canada.
  • After this period, a separate permit is required for continued driving.
  • Vehicles are driven on the right-hand side of the road in Canada.

United Kingdom (UK)

  • Indian driving licenses are recognized in England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland for one year from the date of entry into the UK.
  • Drivers can operate specific classes of vehicles, including motorcycles and cars, but must adhere to driving on the left side of the road.

Australia

  • Indian driving licenses are valid for one year in regions like New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, and the Australian Capital Territory.
  • However, for Northern Australia, an international driving permit is advisable, and the license is valid for three months.
  • Like India, cars are driven on the left side of the road in Australia.

New Zealand

  • Indian driving licenses are accepted for one year in New Zealand.
  • After this period, an NZ driver’s license or an international driving permit is required.
  • Drivers must be at least 21 years old and possess a license in English or translated by the New Zealand Transport Agency.

While these countries offer opportunities for Indian travelers to explore their roads with ease, it’s essential to ensure compliance with local regulations and carry necessary documents. Additionally, while an Indian driving license suffices for driving in these destinations, obtaining an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your local Regional Transport Office (RTO) can expand your driving options in other countries as well.

Traveling abroad and experiencing the thrill of driving in a new country can be immensely rewarding. By familiarizing yourself with driving regulations and requirements, you can embark on unforgettable journeys and create lasting memories on foreign roads.
