Hey psst, want to know my password?

The worst kept secret on the web: People widely share passwords from personal accounts. It is estimated that a third of more than 200 million Netflix users would whisper their credentials to “relatives” — even if they aren’t related.

By sharing passwords with others, you share the subscription costs of the growing number of video services. The more souls, the lower the price. In good Dutch: password sharing is the new file sharing. And while the use of family subscriptions outside the family is being turned a blind eye, Netflix, Disney+ and Spotify are missing out on billions in sales.

Aside from the economic impact, sharing passwords is not without risk. You do not know whether others are careful with your data. Passwords are weak in themselves – easy to guess, easy to steal and abuse. Passwords you share probably won’t be very complex. Try typing twenty punctuation marks with capital letters and exotic symbols without errors.

In the worst case, you also use the shared password for other services. Such carelessness is food for hackers – not just consumers. Many organizations have a knack for continuing to use simple passwords for services to which multiple employees log in.

That could be better, they found at 1Password. This password manager came up with a helper for ‘securely’ sharing passwords with others. The abbreviation deserves a statue: PSST!, which stands for password secure sharing tool.

It works like this: you share a temporary link to your login details. The other person does not need to use 1Password (a paid app) for this. You can revoke that shared link at any time. That should give you more control over who uses your password and when.

PSST! does not seem to prevent the recipient from copying your login details. If you really want to stop sharing, you have to renew the password. Provided you think about that, of course.

Nobody likes to change passwords or hold login details up to the light. It’s one of those rainy afternoon chores that will promptly make you feel even more depressed.

But the need to actively manage your passwords doesn’t diminish. Password managers therefore sound the alarm if your login details have been stolen during a data breach. You can check that yourself on websites like haveibeenpwned.com that sift through billions of stolen passwords and email addresses. My accounts are also in between, unfortunately.

The world has turned into a login company that demands strong passwords, extra authentication, a phone with DigiD and biometric security. For many users – not just the elderly – this is a high threshold.

Staying safe online requires new skills, and it’s a gap in the market. The Canadian 1Password just received a capital injection of 100 million dollars and is estimated to be worth 2 billion dollars. Dutch entrepreneur Robert Vis (founded Messagebird) among others invested money in it.

The standalone password apps face competition from the web browsers. Chrome, Safari, Edge, and Firefox all act as mnemonics and help users come up with complex passwords.

Finding your way between those different password vaults and authentication tools isn’t easy. I’ve since been promoted to walking password manager for a few family members who couldn’t figure it out on their own. It is rewarding and responsible work, such a side job as a digital safe. But it’s still a mess.
