Hero in the Arena, schlemiel in Alkmaar: Maarten Paes remains stoic in any case

VIDEOA greater contrast could hardly be imagined. Due to his blunder, goalkeeper Maarten Paes (23) went from the hero in the Johan Cruijff Arena to the schlemiel in Alkmaar, where FC Utrecht lost no less than 5-1 to AZ. He met his fate yesterday with gusto.

By Tim Reedijk

It was a blunder in its purest form, in the twelfth minute of AZ-FC Utrecht. Maarten Paes let a badly shot ball from Jesper Karlsson slip through his hands above his head. It was immediately the 2-0, after which Utrecht faced a hopeless pot.

It happened to Paes only two weeks after his epic epic at Ajax, where he kept a clean sheet with several saves and the images of his triple intervention on bets by successively Sébastien Haller and Dusan Tadic were widely discussed. “No time to die,” he captioned a photo on Instagram, referring to the James Bond blockbuster.

But things can go fast in a goalkeeper’s life. Paes knows that. It is known that the Nijmegen resident is very busy with his mental constitution. Among other things, film hero Rocky Balboa inspires him. As a 23-year-old goalkeeper, he experienced everything from injuries to conquering a starting spot to losing it. This season he is again first choice and for the time being he is leaving a strong impression.

This afternoon he offered an insight into how he dealt with his heresy against AZ. ,,In my profession, if you miss a detail, it’s a goal. It’s not about what happens, but how you deal with it. Goalkeepers do a lot on intuition. In terms of preparation, you have already done everything in the training week. After such a goal you naturally start to think for a while, but I have my methods for turning off that thinking and going back to that intuition. You get better at that when you have more experience and have experienced more.”

Paes took plenty of time for the press this afternoon and spoke in full sentences about his afternoon. ,,I wouldn’t think it fair to myself and the outside world if I wouldn’t be there now. I am also there when things are going well, so why not when things are going badly?”

It was reminiscent of last season, when the former keeper of the Dutch Juniors made a blunder against Vitesse. The way he reacted to the situation in interviews was not to the taste of former trainer John van den Brom. ,,I don’t think you can say that you are proud of yourself for having completed the game well, if you make such a mistake. You say that when you play for a fourth division team and we play for something more than that,” said Van den Brom at the time.

Now Paes didn’t cheer himself up in his talk afterwards, but he was able to put his feelings into words. Just as he didn’t quite go along with the sudden euphoria after his match against Ajax. ,,I think I’m quite sober and stoic. I don’t walk the polonaise when things go well, I don’t want to float. You know that it is all very close together. That is now apparent again.”
