Here's what Premier Scott Moe says teachers should 'remember' as they get ready to vote on contract:
Would say that there are also you know some important things to remember as we as we as as teachers find their way to voting either for or against the contract. First is this is a contract that will provide them the opportunity to be above the Western Canadian average And that’s something that we always watch closely as we want our our teachers in Saskatchewan to be renumerated, remunerated fairly. This provides that for the next three years and will provide a significant. Portion of back pay because we’ve been about seven or eight months now without a contract. So that back pay will also be provided if the contractor move forward. I mean I would say most you know we also need to ensure that if the contract does not move forward and there are is further action that the school divisions and are will be faced with a you know a difficult choice around ensuring that they’re providing the instructional hours that are required by the very contract that we have an offer in front of the teachers for today. And so you know it’s our hope that it’s a, it’s a fair offer for for our teachers it’s a it’s a fair offer and a good offer for parents and students across the province. And it will provide us some stability in an environment where you know I think we can all agree we need to have an ongoing conversation about education in our province. How we are best providing the supports that are resulting in the greatest opportunities for our children, our students to become all they can be and aspire to be all that they can be. And so it’s it’s this is by no means pass or fail with respect to this this vote this is by no means the end of the conversation. What what do you mean by instructional hours what what is what is the number of instructional hours that are are required to be delivered by the school divisions and. That will that will have to happen. And so it would be, you know, unfortunate if through you know, various. Job action that has occurred or maybe yet to occur that that school divisions would have to make difficult choices about maybe extending the school year by you know a number of days or weeks to ensure that our students do receive the instructional hours that they that that they have a right to. But again that’s all to some degree not relevant until we find our way through to to the vote. It’s it’s our view. It’s a fair offer, It’s fair offer for teachers, it’s fair offer for parents and it certainly is a fair offer that provides the certainty in the learning environment for our students. And I I would say that this is a government that is is not going to, you know, walk away from the conversation that we need to have whether it be with our educators, school divisions or parents on what are on how we can improve our education system into the future that needs to continue.
