There are pollution alerts across Cornwall

Several beaches in Cornwall have once again been hit with pollution alerts following Storm Isha. The warnings, issued by Surfers Against Sewage, mean the condition of the bathing water in some parts may be affected.

Cornwall has been battered over the weekend by Storm Isha as an amber weather warning for wind for the county was issued. Winds of up to 80mph hit Cornwall, as heavy rain fell overnight.

On Monday morning, there are currently 15 places in Cornwall where alerts have been issued. Both the north and the south coasts are impacted, where storm sewage has been discharged from a sewer overflow in this location within the past 48 hours.

Current pollution alerts (from the South West Water map ) are in place at:

  • · Portwinkle
  • · Seaton
  • · Millendreath
  • · East Looe
  • · Pentewan
  • · Portmellon
  • · Long Rock
  • · Gwithian Towans
  • · Godrevy Towans
  • · Portreath
  • · Fistral South
  • · Fistral North
  • · Mawgan Porth
  • · Harlyn Bay
  • · Widemouth Sands

The spills come from combined sewage overflows. These combine surface run-off with sewage from homes, and water companies like South West Water are allowed to let them overflow into the sea after heavy rains to avoid it backing up into homes.

Charity Surfers Against Sewage has marked locations where sewage has been discharged on its interactive map. Similar alerts have also been given for beaches in Devon and Somerset, which were also severely affected by the storm.

Beach pollution can be caused by a number of things, but the main contributor is urban runoff – fertilisers, pesticides, oil, and untreated human and animal waste – entering rivers and other waterways. This then finds its way to the ocean, often during or just after storms.
