Hemant Soren denied interim bail to attend uncle’s funeral
Former Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren was on Saturday denied interim bail by a special Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) court in Ranchi, in a land scam case.Â
The Chief Minister had sought interim bail of 13 days from the court, to attend the funeral of his uncle, Raja Ram Soren, who passed away earlier today.Â
Raja Ram Soren was the elder brother of Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) chief Shibu Soren.Â
On Wednesday, Soren had moved Supreme Court seeking relief in a money laundering case.
Senior advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for Hemant Soren, mentioned his plea challenging his arrest before a bench led by Justice Sanjiv Khanna.
Sibal apprised the bench that the Jharkhand High Court had reserved the order on Soren’s petition challenging his arrest in the last week of February, but the judgment had not been delivered yet.
He also sought an urgent hearing on the grounds of the ongoing Lok Sabha polls and also apprised the bench that the election would be over, and he would remain inside the jail.
Hemant Soren was arrested by the Directorate of Enforcement (ED) in the land scam case in January this year.Â
The probe pertains to huge amounts of proceeds of crime generated by forging official records by showing ‘fake sellers’ and purchasers in the guise of forged or bogus documents to acquire huge parcels of land valued in crores.
