This year’s Tony nominations are led by Alicia Keys musical Hell’s Kitchen and 70s-set music drama Stereophonic both with 13 nods each.

Hell’s Kitchen, which uses the singer’s music to tell a semi-autobiographical story of a teenage girl living in New York, received major nominations including best musical and best actress in a musical for Maleah Joi Moon. The other nominees for best musical are Illinoise, The Outsiders, Suffs and Water for Elephants.

Stereophonic, which received a five-star review from the Guardian’s Gloria Oladipo, leads the best play category and also scored nominations for featured actresses Juliana Canfield and Sarah Pidgeon. It tells the story of a British-American band trying to record an album.

The category of best play also features Jaja’s African Hair Braiding, Mary Jane, Mother Play and Prayer for the French Republic.

While his Succession co-star Kieran Culkin might have won most of the major acting awards for the HBO drama’s final season, Jeremy Strong might now win his first Tony after receiving a nomination for leading actor in a play for a new adaptation of An Enemy of the People.

The actor heads up a category that also includes 2005 winner Liev Schreiber for Doubt: A Parable, William Jackson Harper for Uncle Vanya, previous winner Leslie Odom Jr for Purlie Victorious and Michael Stuhlbarg for Patriots.

Rachel McAdams has received a nomination for leading actress in a play for her Broadway debut as the mother of a child facing various illnesses in Mary Jane. She is up against previous winner Jessica Lange for Mother Play, first-time nominee Sarah Paulson for Appropriate, Betsy Aidem for Prayer for the French Republic and Amy Ryan for Doubt: A Parable. Ryan was a last-minute replacement for Tyne Daly who had to drop out after being unexpectedly hospitalised.

After Eddie Redmayne won an Olivier for his role in Cabaret on the West End, he has also been nominated for leading actor in a musical for the Broadway transfer despite mixed reviews. He faces competition from newcomer Brody Grant in The Outsiders, two-time nominee Jonathan Groff in Merrily We Roll Along, Brian D’Arcy James for Days of Wine and Roses and 73-year-old Dorian Harewood for The Notebook.

Redmayne’s co-star, Glow actor Gayle Rankin, was also nominated for leading actress in a musical and will be up against Hell’s Kitchen’s Moon, Lempicka’s Eden Espinosa, Days of Wine and Roses star Kelli O’Hara and The Notebook’s Maryann Plunkett.

The nominees for best revival of a play include Appropriate, An Enemy of the People and Purlie Victorious. The category of best revival of a musical features Cabaret, Gutenberg!, Merrily We Roll Along and The Who’s Tommy.

Other actors who received nominations include Corey Stoll and Jim Parsons in the featured actor in a play category, Daniel Radcliffe for featured actor in a musical and Bebe Neuwirth for featured actress in a musical.

David Byrne and Fatboy Slim also received a nomination for best original score for Imelda Marcos musical Here Lies Love.

Notable snubs include Steve Carell and Alfred Molina for Uncle Vanya, the recent musical adaptation of The Great Gatsby, Michael Imperioli for An Enemy of the People and Laurie Metcalf for Grey House.

The 77th annual Tony awards will take place on 16 June, hosted by Ariana DeBose.
