An eight-month-old boy remained in critical condition on Monday after he was flung from a car, along with a domestic helper, during a collision with a kerb in Hong Kong a day earlier, prompting police to arrest his father on suspicion of dangerous driving.
Police said they received a report on Sunday afternoon that a vehicle had slammed into a kerb while it was travelling along Tolo Highway towards Sheung Shui.
The father, 52, was driving the car and travelling with the child’s mother, a domestic helper and another woman.
“The domestic helper sitting in the back seat was holding the baby,” a police spokesman said. “They were thrown out of the car during the accident as the vehicle door was opened.”
The father reported feeling chest pain after the crash and the woman suffered neck discomfort. Both were sent to Alice Ho Miu Ling Nethersole Hospital in Tai Po.
The baby sustained head and arm injuries, while the 28-year-old helper had head, arm and leg injuries. The 32-year-old mother reported feeling chest pain. They were all sent to Prince of Wales Hospital in Sha Tin.
A government spokesman said the infant remained in critical condition as of 10am on Monday, while the domestic helper was in serious condition as of Sunday night.
The father was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving causing death.
