The Mitsubishi L100 EV van officially debuts in ASEAN

By now, you’ve probably heard a lot about the Mitsubishi L100. In case you need a recap, it’s an electric kei van that’s built in Indonesia. It’s essentially the Minicab EV for the Southeast Asian Market.

It was previewed late last year with Mitsubishi Motors saying we can expect it to be offered around the region, not just in Indonesia. Production of the kei van has since commenced and its official launch was held during the recent Indonesia International Motor Show (IIMS).

The Mitsubishi L100 is the first kei car in decades to be assembled outside of Japan. It is also the first electric kei vehicle to be sold outside of its home country. For Southeast Asia, it seems that the lone configuration is the two-seater version. In Japan, there is an option to add a second-row bench.

That said, the loss of the rear bench does mean a greater payload capacity, something more important for the L100’s target market. Small and medium-sized business owners will be pleased to know that this little electric van can carry up to 425kg worth of cargo at the back, along with over two meters of floor space.

Motivating the electric kei van is a 20kWh battery mated to a single electric motor mounted to the rear axle. It’s good for 41hp and, more importantly, 195Nm of torque. Per the Japanese specification, battery consumption is rated at 7km/kWh to 9.8km/kWh, giving it an estimated range of up to 180km.

As for prices, the L100 retails for 320,000,000 Indonesian rupiah. Converted to local currency, that’s approximately P1,150,000 at the time of writing. As mentioned, Mitsubishi will be selling this model in other parts of Southeast Asian, but it is still unknown if it will be offered in the Philippine market.
