Heavy wet snow for Alberta continues into Thursday
We are closing out the month of April with a snowstorm across Alberta. I don’t need to tell you maybe you’ve been seeing it out on the roadways. Let’s take you to some of the visuals and then we’ll talk about how much snow is coming to many parts of the province. But this was downtown Calgary on your Tuesday. And yes, not only is the snow piling up, but you know the type. It’s that heavy, wet snow that well when we bring the sun angle this time of year and it doesn’t take long for it to melt. But 20 to 40 centimeters in the foothills in Calgary proper, 5 to 15 centimeters up toward Edmonton more, This is more of a zoomed in look you can see as you get closer. To the foothills, that’s we’re really going to see it pile up. At last check though, Calgary had only really seen about four or five centimeters. But this is the thing, This is deceiving because we talk a lot about snowfall ratio. So the amount of water content in the snow, if you melted it down to 1 centimeters, you would have 10 centimeters of snow in a more colder environment. But this warmer environment where we’re hovering around 0, let’s say it’s 1 centimeter of water equivalent and that will give you maybe 5 centimeters of snowfall. That’s it. So what it means is a heavier, dense snowfall. That’s hard on the back, so take it easy out there. Into Wednesday, we’re going to be watching the switchover for the rain, the milder air temperatures hovering around the 0° mark, and that snow right along the QE two really continues through the better part of your Thursday. So how common or uncommon is it to get snow? In Calgary in April and May, not at all uncommon. You can see we’ve seen it even as late as May 23rd with 35 centimeters of snow. Your temperatures on Wednesday much colder. This is then we should be. This is your departure from your normal temperature, so anywhere from about, say 7 to even 11° colder than what you should be.
