With large areas of Bhabanipur and South Kolkata inundated due heavy rains for the last one-week, the issue has raised serious concern among the state government and Trinamool Congress leadership.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banejee said the flood-like situation exists in Samserganj and Jangipur as well. “We humans do not have hands in the works of nature. Global warming has raised the number of low pressure and depression, thunderstorms and lightning. However, we are trying our best by keeping ourselves prepared. With poll dates nearing in Samserganj and Jangipur in Murshidabad, we have to increase the preparedness,” Mamata Banerjee said.
IMD has predicted another low pressure on Bay of Bengal and depression in the weekend, which has kept the state administration worried ahead of the by-polls. Mamata Banerjee also expressed concern about weather conditions and she urged people to vote even if there is rain or thunderstorm.
Apart from Kolkata, large areas in East and West Midnapore are also inundated due to heavy rainfall. “Similar situation prevails in Murshidabad. I had sent Firhad Hakim for poll related work and he found the situation pretty serious,” Banerjee said.
