Heatwave alert today: As per IMD’s latest prediction heat wave conditions are expected to persist in isolated areas of East India until May 5th and in some parts of South Peninsular India until May 6th, gradually easing thereafter. Conversely, heavy to very heavy rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds, is forecasted for Northeast India on May 5th and 6th. Additionally, wet spells with thunderstorms and gusty winds are anticipated over East India from May 5th to 9th, peaking on May 6th and 7th, as well as over South Peninsular India during the same period, with maximum intensity expected on May 7th and 8th.

Yesterday, heat wave to severe heat wave conditions prevailed in sections of Gangetic West Bengal, while heat wave conditions were observed in certain areas of Rayalaseema and in isolated pockets of Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Odisha, Telangana, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu. Notably, heat wave conditions have persisted in Odisha since April 15th, in Gangetic West Bengal since April 17th, and in Rayalaseema since April 24th.

The highest maximum temperature recorded yesterday was 46.3°C at Nandyal in Rayalaseema. Additionally, light to moderate rainfall, accompanied by isolated thunderstorms and lightning, was observed in various regions across the country.

Meteorological systems and forecasts indicate the presence of a cyclonic circulation over Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and another over Marathwada, with a trough extending from Meghalaya to Marathwada. This configuration is expected to result in widespread rainfall over Northeast India for the next five days, with isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall predicted for Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Sikkim, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura.

Furthermore, a Western Disturbance is observed along Longitudes 64°E to the north of Latitude 30°N and another along Longitudes 52°E to the north of Latitude 25°N. These disturbances will bring isolated to scattered light to moderate rainfall, along with thunderstorms and lightning, over Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan, Muzaffarabad, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Chandigarh, Punjab, and other regions.
