heatwave alert! mercury rising! 47°c to bake these cities, states for next 5 days – imd warning
Heatwave alert! Mercury rising! The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warnings of persistent heat wave to severe heat wave conditions across East India until May 2nd and South Peninsular India until May 3rd, gradually improving thereafter. Maharashtra and Gujarat are expected to experience heat wave conditions over the next five days, while Central India may witness similar conditions from May 3rd to May 5th. Notably, regions such as Gangetic West Bengal, Bihar, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Jharkhand, and Odisha have been enduring heat wave to severe heat wave conditions since April.
Temperature records show that on Tuesday, Kalaikunda in West Bengal and Baharagora in Jharkhand recorded the highest maximum temperatures at 47.2°C and 47.1°C, respectively. Additionally, hot and humid conditions were reported in isolated areas along coastal Karnataka, while isolated regions in Odisha experienced severe warm night conditions.
Heatwave alert:
Over the next five days, maximum temperatures are projected to range from 45-47°C over isolated pockets of north Odisha, Gangetic West Bengal, and Rayalaseema. Many parts of Gangetic West Bengal and Bihar are expected to witness above-normal temperatures by 4-8°C. Central India may experience a rise in maximum temperatures by 2-3°C over the next three days, while west India may see no significant changes initially, followed by a rise of 2-3°C. Maximum temperatures are expected to remain relatively stable over the rest of the country.
Specific regions such as Gangetic West Bengal, west Jharkhand, north Odisha, and Rayalaseema are likely to continue experiencing temperatures in the range of 44-47°C until May 3rd, followed by a decrease thereafter. Heat wave to severe heat wave conditions are anticipated in various places over Gangetic West Bengal, Bihar, Odisha, and other regions on specific dates, gradually diminishing in intensity thereafter. Isolated pockets in Telangana, interior Karnataka, coastal Andhra Pradesh, and other areas may also face heat wave conditions over the next few days. Additionally, certain regions are forecasted to experience hot and humid weather, while warm nights are expected in others during specific time frames.
The IMD’s May forecast indicates above-normal maximum temperatures across most of the country, with exceptions in northeast India, certain parts of northwest and central India, and adjoining areas of the northeast peninsular region where normal to below-normal maximum temperatures are expected. Similarly, above-normal minimum temperatures are projected for most regions, with exceptions in specific areas where normal to below-normal minimum temperatures are anticipated. The IMD also predicts an increase in heatwave days, particularly in regions like south Rajasthan, west Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, Marathwada, and Gujarat, with slightly fewer increases in other areas. Furthermore, rainfall in May 2024 is anticipated to be normal across the country, with variations in intensity across different regions.
