'He won't take rubbish' - Pundit backs Man United interim boss Ralf Rangnick to be a success

Ralf Rangnick won’t shy away from dishing out tough love to Manchester United’s under-performing stars, according to former Scotland striker Frank McAvennie.

United’s new interim boss will take charge of his team for the first time on Sunday when they welcome Crystal Palace to Old Trafford.

Rangnick was in the stands to watch the Red Devils come from behind to beat Arsenal on Thursday, to secure a first Premier League win in four matches.

The victory lifted United up to seventh, a far cry from the title race they wanted to be involved in after backing former boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer heavily in the summer.

The acquisitions of Cristiano Ronaldo, Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane meant expectations were raised.

However, after an underwhelming start to the season Solskjaer was dismissed, and a race for the title has now become a scramble for fourth spot.

Nevertheless McAvennie is confident Rangnick has the know-how to get more out United’s stars than his predecessor did.

“He’s experienced, we know that much,” He told Football Insider.

“But no one had heard of him until a week ago. There is nothing wrong with that.

“Klopp has come out and said some amazing things, he has to be good.

“On paper, he’s what they need. He has loads of experience. The last thing they needed was another Ole.

“From what I gather, you don’t mess with Rangnick. He will run those players hard.

“He will take no rubbish from any of them. That’s what they need.

“Some of the players there have been getting away with murder for too long.

“Rangnick will give them a kick up the backside.”
