Hawaiian Airlines resumes flights to Sydney and Brisbane in December

Hawaiian Airlines is poised to resume flights to Australia – after an 18 month absence due to Covid-19.

Flights will restart to Sydney and Brisbane from December 15, according to the company’s website and Twitter account.

The airline hopes to bring an Airbus A330 out of retirement to ferry 68 passengers in ‘economy comfort’ and business class.

But the US carrier made it clear to customers that the flights Down Under are no certainty given lockdown and border restrictions.

‘We keep our published schedule available for sale further out but we constantly adjust it based on the likelihood of our ability to serve the market,’ Hawaiian Airlines said in a statement to Executive Traveller.

‘This has been true throughout the pandemic as conditions evolve in each of our markets.

‘We look forward to returning to Australia soon but don’t have a definitive date to announce.’

Users on Facebook were similarly sceptical of the announcement, as one person wrote: ‘It will never happen. They are selling tickets and then they’ll have your money and you won’t get a flight’.

While another added: ‘I’d be checking the refund policy very carefully. The hermit nation isn’t open yet. Nothing official’.

This announcement comes as Graham Turner, chief executive of Flight Centre had predicted Australians will be flying to to London by November.

He also claimed mainland Europe, Fiji, Canada, the United States and Singapore could be on the cards before Christmas.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison announced vaccination passports could be in the hand’s of holiday-hungry fully-vaccinated Australians in just a few months time when vaccination rates are due to hit 80 per cent.

But in a bizarre battle of the borders it appears Sydneysiders could travel overseas before they enter the Sunshine State or Western Australia, which remains tightly shut to NSW.

Mr Turner said he expects Queensland and other parts of the country to have a tougher time acclimatising with the rest of the world.

‘NSW has nothing to lose,’ the chief executive said.

‘They’ve got the infection. It doesn’t matter that they bring in more.’

The optimistic travel chief said travellers would likely only be required to quarantine for two to five days on their return to Australia when international travel resumes – and it could even be at home.

NSW on Monday reached nearly 47 per cent vaccination, after the state recorded 1,257 cases on Covid-19, down from 1,599 on Saturday.
