Have nationwide kitchens to fight hunger, Supreme Court tells Centre

The Supreme Court has asked the Centre to frame a scheme to set up community kitchens throughout the country to tackle hunger and malnutrition in the wake of the pandemic and lockdown which have impoverished huge sections of the populace.

A three-judge bench comprising Chief Justice of India NV Ramana and Justices Surya Kant and Hima Kohli on Wednesday asked the Centre to consult all states on the scheme. The order came on a plea filed by social activists Anun Dhawan, Ishann Dhawan and Kunjana Singh, seeking subsidised canteens in all states and UTs to ensure food security in the wake of the havoc wreaked by the pandemic. India has fallen in the hunger index ranks consequent to the slowdown in the economy which has seen many layoffs and left a huge section struggling. Newspaper ads on gold auctions and foreclosures have also been on the rise.

Taking all the factors into account, the bench had asked states which had not responded to the suggestion for community kitchens to respond to the plea. Tamil Nadu runs ‘Amma canteens’ which provide food at a very subsidised rate. Many other states have similar schemes for the poor and the impoverished.

The plea argued by advocate Ashima Mandla claimed that global agencies estimated that three lakh children die every year in India due to hunger. At least 38% below 5 years had stunted growth. The bench earlier slapped costs on Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Manipur, Odisha, Goa and Delhi for failing to submit their views on the issue.
