PITTSBURGH — Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby is finishing off a stellar season by entering another elite list. With two points against the Detroit Red Wings, the star forward has tied Phil Esposito as the 10th-leading scorer in NHL history.
Crosby brought his career total to 1,590 points, with 591 goals and 999 assists. This season, he’s totaled 41 goals and 47 assists.
Crosby appears to have plenty of life left in his NHL career and could continue moving up the all-time scorers list pretty rapidly. With his 1,590 points, he now trails Joe Sakic (1,641) by 51 points. When he reaches that mark, he’ll then be just 82 goals behind fellow Penguins legend Mario Lemieux (1,723).
With Crosby’s placement in the top 10, the Penguins now have four members with he, Lemieux, Ron Francis (5th) and Jaromir Jagr (2nd).
Those who round out the list include Steve Yzerman (1,755), Marcel Dionne (1,771), Ron Francis (1,798), Gordie Howe (1,850), Mark Messier (1,887), Jagr (1,921), and Wayne Gretzky (2,857)
The two-time Hart Memorial Trophy and three-time Stanley Cup champion continues to cement his place as potentially the greatest hockey player of all time. At 36 years old, he appears to still be headed upward.
