The recovery after the 0-1 defeat in the opening game against Be Quick’28 a month ago is going well for FC Eindhoven Women. The team of the trainer duo Ivo Veltrop/Sandra Swinkels showed itself at Ter Leede. FC Eindhoven played an acceptable match with the former top formation in women’s football, which led to a 1-2 victory.
In addition to the fierce opposition from the superpower in women’s football – national champion in 2001, 2003, 2004 and 2007 and champion in the top division in 2013 and 2017 – FCE had to deal with a fierce wind at sports park De Roodemolen that blew across the field and a turf of maximum dimensions, which ultimately cost the team a lot of crumbs. Nevertheless, the Eindhoven judging corps got off to an excellent start. Already after five minutes the blue and whites took the lead through a long shot from captain Silvie van der Plas, 0-1.
As the first half progressed, the home side’s opposition increased without creating great chances. The best opportunity was for FC Eindhoven attacker Juul Santema. In free position, the striker headed the ball against the Ter Leede goalkeeper. The equalizer came at an unfortunate moment just before half-time. An inswinger from a corner fell straight into the Eindhoven goal, 1-1.
Immediately after the break, FCE picked up the thread again. Within three minutes, the Eindhoven girls were back in the lead. A thunderous shot by Silvie van der Plas was touched at last by Myrthe van de Laar, causing the ball to change direction, 1-2. Moments later, the same Van de Laar saw a shot through the post jump back into the field. It remained exciting until the very end, but FC Eindhoven finally won the game with their tongues on their shoes.
Coach Ivo Veltrop looked back with satisfaction on the tough battle afterwards. ,,I think that due to the large field and the windy conditions, many teams will die here. There was nothing to criticize about the fighting spirit of our girls. As far as the execution is concerned, it could all be a bit better.”
FC Eindhoven: Kolen, Van Wershoven, Wijnands, Van Oorschot, Van der Groef; Van Bakel (46. Mutsaers), Van der Plas, Verploegen; Van der Laar, Santema, Van Doorn.
