Hans Mulder, curator of natural history collections at the University of Amsterdam, is the winner of the ninth edition of the Jan Wolkers Prize for the best Dutch-language nature book. That was announced in the live broadcast of the NPO Radio 1 program Early birds.

Mulder’s book, titled The discovery of nature, is about how Western societies’ view of nature changed with new discoveries between the 16th and 20th centuries. The book consists of twenty stories about people and subjects that played a role in them.

For example, Anthoni van Leeuwenhoek’s home-built microscope passes by, who discovered bacteria with it. The story of naturalist Charles Darwin is also described, who, during a voyage on a sailing ship, beagle made discoveries that formed the basis of his theory of evolution. The stories about birds, bacteria and insects, among other things, are accompanied by drawings and watercolors that Mulder found in the Artis library.

“Mulder is a true storyteller and knows how to keep the reader engaged for a long time, aided by touches of irony and a generous collection of illustrations and classic prints,” the jury wrote.

The Jan Wolkers Prize is an initiative of Early birds, the World Wildlife Fund and de Volkskrant. Mulder will receive an amount of 5000 euros and an original portrait drawing. Other nominees for the Jan Wolkers Prize were The Underworld of the Garden of Rome of the Kaa, Biography of a fly by Paul Faassen and Jaap Robben, The Poel by Pauline de Bok and Terra Ultima by Raoul Deleo and Noah J. Stern.

The prize has been awarded since 2017. In that year, Koos van Zomeren received the first.
