sydenham bypass overnight road closures for three nights for essential maintenance works

The road will be closed Belfast-bound this week

A major road into Belfast will be closed for the next three nights to allow for essential maintenance works.

The A2 Sydenham Bypass will be closed Belfast-bound from 11pm to 6am on Tuesday, February 20th, Wednesday 21st and Thursday 22nd.

A diversion will be in place while access to George Best Belfast City Airport will be available from the Bangor-bound side of the carriageway.

In a statement, a Department for Infrastructure (DfI) spokesperson said: “The Belfast bound carriageway will be closed overnight on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday this week between the hours of 11pm and 6am.

“These closures are necessary to carry out ground condition testing in preparation for a future resurfacing scheme, which the Department plans to progress if the necessary funding becomes available.

“It is also planned to carry out some urgent remedial patching to repair the surface until resurfacing can be completed. A diversion will be in place throughout and access to George Best City Airport will be available from the Bangor bound side of the carriageway.”

Belfast City Airport is advising passengers to plan their travel accordingly and leave extra time for their journey.

A spokesperson for the airport said: “Due to ongoing road works, the Sydenham By-Pass (Belfast bound) will be closed for three nights from 20th – 23rd February from 2300 – 0600 hrs.

“A diversion will be in place throughout this time and access to Belfast City Airport will be available from the Bangor bound side of the carriageway.

“We advise you plan your travel accordingly and leave extra time for your journey.”

Just last month, concerns were raised regarding the poor quality of the citybound road surface on the Sydenham Bypass.

The road that leads to Belfast City Airport has fallen into disrepair over the past few years and has sparked worries from motorists about the impact that it may be having on their vehicles.

While the Holywood-bound lane had resurfacing work completed in 2020 and 2022, no work has taken place on the citybound lane.
