Haiti kidnapping – 17 American Christian missionaries, including kids, taken from bus by a gang after leaving orphanage

OFFICIALS say up to 17 US missionaries have been kidnapped by a gang in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, on Saturday.

A source in Haiti's security forces told CNN that three children and 14 adults were among those abducted.

The missionaries were on a bus after leaving an orphanage and were heading to the airport when they were abducted.

“The welfare and safety of US citizens abroad is one of the highest priorities of the Department of State. We are aware of these reports and have nothing additional to offer at this time,” a US State Department spokesperson said.

The New York Times was the first to report the abductions and reported that more details on the kidnappings were unclear. The report did not give details on the missionaries or their church.

Jennifer Viau, a spokeswoman for the U.S. State Department in Washington, said by email that “we’re looking into this”.

The U.S. Embassy in Haiti did not respond to a request for comment outside business hours.

Violence and crime in Haiti have been on the rise over the years with gangs reportedly controlling half of the capital city.

Five people, including students, were injured in a shootout on Monday.

Another bus was also hijacked that same day.
