Habitantes de Alaska reciben $3.000 por riqueza petrolera

ANCHORAGE, Alaska, EE.UU. — 

Casi todos los habitantes de Alaska recibieron una ganancia inesperada de más de 3.000 dólares el martes, día en que el estado comenzó a distribuir los pagos del fondo de inversión de Alaska, que ha sido alimentado con el dinero de la riqueza generada por el petróleo de la entidad.

El pago, cuyo nombre oficial es el Fondo Permanente de Alaska (PFD por sus iniciales en inglés), ascendió a 2.622 dólares, la cantidad más alta de la historia. Los legisladores de Alaska añadieron 662 dólares como beneficio único para ayudar a los residentes con los altos costos de la energía.

Los depósitos directos empezaron a llegar a las cuentas bancarias el martes, y para aquellos que optaron por un cheque, lo recibirán más adelante.

Los residentes usan el dinero de distintas formas, ya sea para comprar grandes televisores, vehículos o algún otro producto, para vacacionar o lo ahorran o invierten en fondos universitarios. En las zonas rurales de Alaska, el dinero puede ayudar a compensar los enormes costos del combustible y los alimentos, como los 14 dólares por un paquete de 12 refrescos, los 4 dólares por un manojo de apio y los 3 dólares de un pequeño envase de yogur griego.

“Estamos experimentando una inflación récord que no habíamos visto desde que se pagó el primer PFD en 1982”, dijo el gobernador Mike Dunleavy en un video. “Los habitantes de Alaska han estado soportando el peso de esta inflación desde la gasolinera hasta la tienda de comestibles, y el PFD de este año proporcionará un alivio muy necesario a medida que nos acercamos al invierno”.

Los pagos no podrían ser más oportunos para los residentes de la vasta costa occidental del estado, que fue azotada el fin de semana pasado por los remanentes del tifón Merbok. Los daños en las viviendas y la infraestructura fueron generalizados a lo largo de 1.609 kilómetros (1.000 millas) de costa.

El pago por la riqueza petrolera, que algunos en Alaska consideran un derecho, suele derivarse de las ganancias de la cuenta de inversión del fondo. El fondo diversificado se creó durante la construcción del oleoducto transatlántico de Alaska en la década de 1970 y ahora tiene un valor de 73.600 millones de dólares.
