Ousmane Duncanson, Troy Beeman win state wrestling titles

ALBANY, N.Y. (WETM) – When it was all said and done, Tioga and Waverly wrestling shined the brightest at states.

Tioga’s Ousmane Duncanson capped off a storied career with his third consecutive New York State Championship at 160 pounds in Albany at MVP Arena. Waverly’s Troy Beeman secured his first-ever state crown at 285 pounds in overtime at the New York State D-II Wrestling Championships Saturday night.

Duncanson, the top seed, cruised over Wilson High School’s Jake Stephenson via technical fall 16-0. The match was never in doubt as Duncanson scored early and never looked back. With the victory, Duncanson becomes the first-ever Tioga three-time New York State Champion in school history. Ousmane ends his high school career with a (34-0) record and winner of a staggering 70 matches in a row. Duncanson will compete at D-I Lock Haven University next season.

Ousmane also becomes the first Section IV wrestler to earn three New York State Championships in his career since Norwich’s Dante Geislinger accomplished that feat from 2018 to 2020 at 113 pounds.

Beeman (22-3), the fifth seed, polished off an improbable run to the 285 state crown upsetting previously unbeaten William Wortkoetter (26-1), a sophomore from Wilson High School in the finals. Troy battled Wortkoetter and took the match to overtime.

In the extra session, Wortkoetter tried for a big throw but Beeman countered and got the match-ending takedown with back points winning 9-4. It was an emotional win for Beeman, who also upset top seed Landon Andrade of Sherburne-Earlville 10-6 in the semis, as his brother Tyler Beeman recovers from a severe car accident in December. The accident took the life of Peyton Shaw, Tyler’s longtime girlfriend, who was a beloved student-athlete in the Waverly community.

Beeman becomes the first Wolverine wrestler to capture a state title since current Kent State University wrestler, AJ Burkhart, won a championship in 2015 at 99 pounds.

Tioga earned another New York State overall team title in Albany with 210.5 total points for the fifth consecutive year. All 10 Tioga wrestlers who qualified for states placed on the podium.

The Tigers had three more finalists Saturday night in sophomore Jayden Duncanson (131 pounds), senior Gianni Silvestri (138 pounds) and fellow senior Caden Bellis (152 pounds). At 131, Jayden Duncanson (31-2) was pinned in the third period by top seed Gavin Mangano of Shoreham-Wading River at 5:57 of the bout.

Silvestri, a two-time state champion, lost to Mount Sinai’s Brayden Fahrbach 6-5. In a close battle of unbeaten wrestlers and previous state champions, Fahrbach outlasted Silvestri in a bout that could have gone to either wrestler. Silvestri concludes his memorable career with a (33-1) season record before he wrestles at D-I Clarion University next year.

Tioga senior Caden Bellis, a defending state champion, dropped a 4-3 decision to Copenhagen’s Tavian Camper in the 152 pound finals. Bellis ends his Tioga career with a (33-2) season mark after a thrilling championship bout where Camper earned the victory. Next season, Bellis will compete at The University of Pennsylvania for the Quakers in the IVY League.
