Albany Airport adds new airline, makes progress on renovations

ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) — Albany International Airport will service non-stop flights to Raleigh, N.C. with a new airline, Avelo, taking off in May.

“We know there’s a lot of connection with North Carolina,” Courtney Goff, Communications Manager at Avelo, said. “Not only for the capital, but because of the research triangle down there with Duke, NC State, and University of North Carolina and a lot of people that have second homes down there.”

Philip Calderone, CEO of Albany International Airport, said the airport surpassed challenges from the COVID-10 pandemic and other obstacles, and this new line will bring $15 Million to the region.

“One of the arguments that we made for Raleigh Durham is certainly the connectivity between all of the exciting economic development activity happening in our area as well as within the Research Triangle in North Carolina,” Calderone said.

The announcement comes as the airport continues to undergo a $100 Million terminal expansion project. Most recently, the pedestrian bridge and rotunda were demolished. Calderone said the project is still on track to be completed next year.

The airport also recently received $10 Million from the airport terminal grant program, which will go towards renovating the A Concourse.

“A concourse is located in our 79 building, it’s a very old part of the airport that needs major investment,” Calderone said. “It will allow us to continue to pursue new airlines with the option of giving them their own gates at A concourse and it will also allow us to make critical improvements to the HVAC System, modernize heating and cooling systems, and disability accessible handicapped bathrooms.”

Flights to and from Raleigh, N.C. begin May 10th, 2024.
